As we saw in the movie, the dreamers have to have a totem, something from the real world to help keep them grounded in the dream. Those totems reflect a piece of their personality or something very important to them. Dom has the spinning top that he took from Mal. Ariadne has the hollowed out chess piece, reflecting her ability to create the architecture of the dream, the playing field so to speak. Arthur has the loaded die, showing him as willing to take chances but wanting the odds in his favor.
